Operational Risk Management That Works

Learning to do what an (Operational) Risk Manager does

This is an MVP that will be continually enhanced.

Learning By Doing

Unlock your potential as an exceptional risk manager with Operational Risk Management That Works course—where theory meets practice and transforms aspiring professionals into industry leaders."

Don't just learn about risk management – master it through hands-on practice. While other courses tell you what risk managers do and what tools they use, we go further. We help you develop real skills (know-how), not just knowledge (know-about).

Instead of just reading about or listening to someone describing risk management, you will observe how risk solutions are created, practice building your own solutions, and receive timely feedback which will help you improve your ability to create better solutions and ultimately become a proficient risk manager.

Think of it like learning to ride a bike. Reading about cycling won't get you pedaling. You need to:

  • Get on the bike and try

  • Get feedback on your technique

  • Adjust and improve

  • Keep practicing until you're cruising

We use this same approach to turn you into a skilled risk manager. You'll practice, get feedback, refine your skills, and repeat until you're confident and proficient.

Join us and transform from an aspiring risk manager into a highly successful one through active learning and real-world application.

This course teaches how to become proficient at risk management through learning by doing, including practical hands-on learning, case studies guided discussions, active participation, and targeted feedback.  In addition to in-class case studies and discussions, off line, you should deliberately practice Building Fundamental (Risk Management) Capabilities (BFC ) which are targeted exercises at the end of each class that identify what you should be able to do. These practices will provide you with the necessary self-feedback on areas in which you require more guidance or practice. Each topic is posted on this website and you are required to "comment" on each component. The comment section is there for you to ask questions about areas that you are having difficulty with. As part of learning by doing, you are expected to ask your question, describe your attempt and answer, and the difficulty you encountered. I will reply to these comments and provide you with the necessary feedback and guidance for you to develop the answer yourself.

At the end of this course, for any financial business activity, you should be able to â€‹

  • identify the embedded potential financial and reputational losses (the risk)

  • develop controls to contain those potential losses with the risk appetite

  • develop the financial and operational resilience to rapidly recover from any one of those potential losses after they occur and

  • develop the governance structure to ensure that all those involved in identifying, controlling, and creating resilience, know what they are supposed to do, and by when,  while meeting all regulatory expectations.
